Stan Atkinson, Sacramento’s Preeminent Newscaster, Passes Away

If you lived in Sacramento in the nineteen seventies through the first decade this century,. you remember what a great television news anchor and reporter Stan Atkinson was. I just found out he died last week at age 92. I never met him but once saw him in person at an event where he displayed the magic that made him an icon in Central California.
My comment on the Sacramento Bee website – I attended a political speech in the mid 1980s in a classroom amphitheater at UC Davis. After the rhetorical combatants had finished, Stan Atkinson, as scheduled, stepped to a microphone to recap the evening. But his mic was dead, and he said, “I guess you can’t hear me…” And a student responded, “That’s okay, you’ve got a nice voice.” The audience laughed, and Stan calmly delivered some audible, polished remarks that pleased his listeners.
