Several Parisiennes tell me Lucian and I might be an even more dazzling couple.  Within a week Picasso hears we\u2019ve returned and invites us to his studio.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cYou go, dear, I\u2019ll be busy with my own work,\u201d Lucian says.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cDon\u2019t let him intimidate you this time.  Bring a few of your paintings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cI\u2019m hardly in awe of Picasso.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cYou\u2019re not yourself in his presence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cHe\u2019s arrogant and a bore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tOf course Lucian comes.<\/p>\n<p>\tBarechested and wearing shorts and slippers, Picasso opens the door, glances at Lucian, and embraces me and kisses each cheek, saying in French, in Spanish, language doesn\u2019t matter, \u201cLady Christine Blackwood, you\u2019re so exquisite you really must sit for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cI\u2019d love to, but I\u2019ve many times posed for my husband, and he makes me sit forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cHe\u2019ll overcome slowness once he\u2019s more experienced.  With me, you\u2019ll be finished in a couple of hours.  Maybe someday you\u2019ll be able to paint with alacrity, Lucian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tMy husband tightens his lips and he and Picasso watch as I stroll around a vast, high-ceilinged studio alight with paintings on the floor, on walls, easels, and propped on tables, and after a time, during which Lucian and Picasso don\u2019t speak, I turn to say, \u201cThey\u2019re wonderful, but you\u2019re often not very kind to women on canvas.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cI only tell the truth about wives and lovers.  Friends I render most delicately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cTell me when.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cNow, my dear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cBut Lucian\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cDon\u2019t worry, darling,\u201d my husband says.  \u201cYou and the maestro go to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tHe nods at each of us, trying to smile, and leaves the studio.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cPlease, step onto my balcony.  There\u2019s no view of Paris so magnificent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cIncroyable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cYou have Paris and Picasso and an opportunity for artistic immortality.  There\u2019s a robe in the other room when you undress.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cIs that necessary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cIf you\u2019re more comfortable without the robe, that\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tI return in the robe and Picasso says, \u201cPlease sit in this chair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tI comply. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd take off the robe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tI\u2019m still wearing my bra and panties. <\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cMadam, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cI\u2019ve never posed like that except for Lucian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tHe shakes his head, and I comply and hand all my garments to Picasso, who though short and bald looks masculine and strong for a man a half century older than I.  A generation closer, and perhaps I could have loved him.  He places me on a sofa and asks me to look at him and then requests I gaze right and left and move my legs into various positions.  He talks about wives and women and difficult children and countless fans and collectors and unscrupulous dealers as he brushes on paint.  What a charming man.  What masterful strokes he applies to the large canvas.  Each feels like silk on my skin.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cYou\u2019re a wonderful subject and inspire me to paint even better and faster than usual.  This work, after perhaps two or three more sittings, will be ready for any museum or gallery I choose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cMay I have a look?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cBut of course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cPlease hand me my robe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cWe mustn\u2019t cover such femininity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tI arise and walk toward the canvas but before I arrive Picasso puts down his brush, steps forth, and bear hugs me around my lower back as he begins sucking my neck, my ears, my shoulders, biting my lips, one hand rubbing my legs, before he kicks off his slippers and drops his shorts and lowers me to the floor where we clinch until we relax, and Lucian walks in.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cYou filthy whore.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cLucian, I\u2019m less unfaithful than you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cGet dressed before I throttle you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t I arise and run to get my clothes.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cWe\u2019re all bohemians,\u201d Picasso says.  \u201cThis is how we live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tMy husband charges.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u201cHe\u2019s an old man,\u201d I shout.<\/p>\n<p>\tLucian, who brawls a good deal albeit with modest success against larger men his age, punches Picasso in the jaw, using his left hand, the one that wields his brush.
